Breast cysts

Breast cysts are very common formations experienced by nearly 75% of women. There can be one or several cysts in one or both mammary glands, and they affect women of all ages. Women are most commonly concerned that cancer can develop from a breast cyst.

Breast cysts are normal elements of ageing after 35, no formations in breast may be left unnoticed because the risk of breast cancer increases after that age.

Breast cysts are formations similar to those observed in any part of a body: a fluid-filled sack within the breast. Formation of cysts in breast is primarily determined by hormonal changes in a female body and caused by the key female hormones – estrogen, progesterone and prolactin.

Cysts can develop in breast at any age, yet they often appear between 30 and 50, most commonly at the age of 40-49 years when essential hormonal changes take place in a female body. The structure of breast cells also changes at that time: it becomes dense, and the so-called cystic changes develop. Disorders of thyroid gland activity and hormone replacement therapy, for example, can contribute to formation of cysts.

Cysts can be different in size, from 2 mm to 6 cm. A cyst size can change within the menstrual cycle: cysts can be larger before monthly periods and shrink when a new cycle starts; occasionally, cysts can be painful and inflamed.

Ovarian cysts

Ovarian cysts are quite common among women. Development of functional cystic ovarian formations is caused by various hormonal disorders or hormone imbalance.

Cysts can manifest no symptoms, and a woman can well have no idea of cysts in her ovaries. They can be detected during ultrasonic examinations. Women who take care of their health should pass ultrasonic examination at least once a year even if they have no complaints.

Functional cysts are most commonly observed. They develop from short-term or long-term hormone imbalance, and normally they are absorbed in 2-3 months. Painful symptoms can develop if the diameter of cyst size reaches 4-5 cm, smaller cysts normally cause no complains.

If changes develop in ovary cells, ovarian cysts of other type can develop; instead of being absorbed, they trend to subsist or even change in size and/or structure. Similar to functional formations, such cysts are most frequently non-malignant, yet malignant formations or even cancer development cannot be excluded.

A malignant cyst manifests no particular symptoms at early stage. A cyst, unless absorbed, gradually can cause discomfort in abdominal area, swelling, or menstrual cycle disorders.

Symptoms indicative to development of ovarian cyst:

  • Persisting discomfort in lower abdominal area;
  • Pain localized in one side;
  • Changes in menstrual bleeding;
  • Sudden, exquisite pain in lower abdominal area;
  • Infertility;
  • Swelling in abdominal cavity, painful gas formation in intestines;
  • Pain during coitus;
  • Pain in lower spinal area;
  • Increased sensitivity of mammary glands;
  • Sickness and vomiting.
